A Poem for the Evening: Sweet Quiet of Night

I greet you again sweet quiet of night,

I’ve known you, dear friend, through darkness to light.

At dusk you now settle as twilight fades dim,

and warming the kettle, I hear your soft hymn,

It calls me to rest and whispers, “be still”.

I find my heart blessed, stepping out of the whirl

of a day that has passed in sharp waves of motion

and settle at last, finding kinder an ocean

in laying my head to rest on the pillow,

safe from the dread of storms that harsh billow.

Instead, I am calm and content where I lay,

my sleep a cool balm for the stress of the day.
